3/25/2023 0 Comments Gimli gliderI'll post pics tomorrow of what we did on the MLG.īut, hey, got an all access pass to the Gimli Glider and had a ton of fun designing the gear. Yes, NZ does RAR LAX (and I've flown on that route a bunch of times). Your technical knowledge sure brings a lot to .Īnd yes I told the "above the line" folks that a 767 doesn't have the range from Auckland to LA. That's really cool longhauler that you took the time to run the numbers for such a hypothetical situation. YRP's paved runway is of a near-identical dimension to YRO's. In fact I remember the ex-CO DC-10 that landed at Carp/YRP. Yeah it would have been tough, but it would have definitely been doable completely empty. It would have made the museum even greater. My only wish was that they could not buy and modify the old 60's mod air terminal and use that space. Glad they saved it as I remember seeing lines of these retired AC planes at the airport way back in the early 70's. I s a fantastic museum and the tour of the interior of the AC Viscount is worth the price of admission alone. I figure if Captain Gigeure can land a DC-9 there, an empty 767-200 with its fine Boeing wing would be a breeze! I remember when this was discussed on this forum, I did the calculations as I have some old -200 manuals on DVDs, I think the actual ground run was about 1800 feet. for the record, I would have no problem landing 604 at YRO. If anything, to wander through an AC Viscount in its retirement configuration, or to actually touch a Bristol Freighter.Īnd. It's a great museum btw, and encourage people to visit. I did write to them and they declined, citing the lack of proper room and feeling sitting outdoors would not do the aircraft justice. They have the (outdoor) room and there is a modest connection to Western Canada. (Used to be named the Western Canadian Aviation Museum). I always thought the best place for it was the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada at Winnipeg Airport. Oh well, I'd much rather have the AC DC-9 there than a 762. The most appropriate site, especially given the glider flight departed YOW enroute for YEG would have been the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa, but it doesn't have enough space to store it indoors (there's a retired RCAF H model Herc outside, let alone the fact YRO's runway would have had a tough time handling a landing by FIN 604.
